Glucosamine Sulfate is an amino sugar that is critical to the integrity of joint tissues. It is a primary constituent of proteoglycans, which is used by the body to form articular cartilage. Its main action is to stimulate the synthesis of cartilage components (such as glycosaminoglycans, proteoglycans, collagens, proteins, RNA, and DNA) so that joints can be repaired. Further, Glucosamine Sulfate has been shown to exert a protective effect against joint degredation, and to enhance the synthesis of hyaluronan (the substance that gives the joint fluid its thick viscosity, providing lubrication between the synovial membrane and cartilage). Chondroitin Sulfate has not been studied as thoroughly as Glucosamine Sulfate, but is also a component of cartilage. Chondroitin Sulfate is a sulfated polysaccharide and shares properties with hyaluronic acid, a joint lubricator. There is some evidence that it can lower cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations in the blood. Many people claim equal or greater results by combing Chondroitin Sulfate with Glucosamine Sulfate rather than taking Glucosamine Sulfate alone.
